How to view email headers

Getting Started

If you have reported a problem with email to Gradwell Support you may be asked to supply the full email headers for further examination.

We have listed below some of the common email clients and how to extract the emails which you can then send to the Support technicians to enable them to continue working on your problem.

Basic Configuration
 

Mozilla Thunderbird

  • Click on the "View" menu, then "Message Source," (ctrl-U in windows, meta-U in unix, ?-U on the Mac) you can then copy the contents of the window into an email to send to support
     

Microsoft Outlook Express

  • Open the email message, Click on the FIle menu, then select Properties
  • Click on the Details tab, then click on Message Source
  • A new window will open containing all of the email headers and the original message. Right click inside this window and choose Select All, Right click again and choose Copy
  • You can now paste the headers into an email to send to support
     

Microsoft Outlook

  • Open the email message, select View followed by Options
  • The email headers can be found under Delivery Options in the Internet headers box, these can be copy and pasted into a new email
     

Microsoft Outlook 2007

  • Open the email message
  • Look for a box called Options in the ribbon at the top. Click the arrow in the bottom right hand corner
     

  • The email headers can be found under Delivery Options in the Internet headers box, these can be copy and pasted into a new email
     

Eudora for the Mac

  • Open the email, then click on the "Blah Blah Blah" button which is in the upper left hand corner of the message window
  • This will show the full email headers, you can now copy the contents of this window into a new email
     

OS/X Mail

  • Select "View" from the menu, then "Show" followed by "Raw Source", or you can press Option-Apple-U as a keyboard shortcut
  • You should now be able to highlight the text by clicking on Edit, then Select All and copy the contents by clicking Edit followed by Copy
