How to setup your Snom 300 VoIP phone
Getting started
NOTE To use a VoIP phone, you must have a router connected to an ADSL line. A USB modem will not work.
Unpack the phone and cables and plug them together as follows (easiest done with the phone base upside down):
- Connect the base unit and handset together using the curly phone cable; it plugs into the socket with the phone icon. If using a headset, plug it into the other socket underneath the base unit
- Connect the ethernet socket marked NET to one of the sockets on your router, using the coloured network cable. (Or if you have a hub or switch inboard of the router, use that.)
- If you don't have enough network sockets, you can connect a PC (for example) into the second socket.
- Connect and plug in the power cable.

Basic configuration
Switch the power on and leave the phone to initialise for a minute or two.
- If you have your network set up to hand out IP addresses (using DHCP), the phone will pick up an IP address and be ready for use. If not, see Setting an IP address
- If you bought your phone direct from us, it will already be configured for use with your first extension. If you bought it from somewhere else, see Configuring the phone
- If you are using a headset, you can set it as the default audio device (rather than the handset) as described in setting up a headset
Configuring the phone
If you have purchased your Snom 300 from Gradwell, we will have configured it for use with your first extension. However, if you wish to add or edit an account, or if the phone was not purchased from us, you will need to know how to do this yourself.
The easiest way to configure the phone is via the web interface. To access this, set the device up as described above, and then enter the IP address of the phone into a web browser.
If you are unsure of the IP address for your Snom 300, press the down silver arrow on your device 11 times and then press the tick button. The IP address will be displayed.
From the web interface, click on one of the identity links to configure the account. The important fields to fill in here are all provided in your welcome email or the control panel for the first (default) extension:
- Account: this is your seven digit extension number
- Password: the password you set for your extension in the control panel
- Registrar: enter sip.gradwell.com
- Outbound Proxy: if you are in a NAT environment, enter nat.gradwell.com:5082 in this field. A sign that you are in a NAT environment is if your phone has an IP address similar to 192.168.X.X, or you experience one way audio when attempting to make calls (the other party can hear you, but you can't hear them)
Click Save and your phone will register with our service.
If you wish, you can add text into the Displayname field (which will be displayed to other parties when you call them) and the Display text for idle screen field (which will show a name for the account on your device display). You can also change the ringtone for the identity here.
This video will help walk you through this process. You can pause and rewind the video as necessary, and use it along with the notes above.

Using your phone
To answer a call: use the tick button to pick up the call on the headset (if any), pick up the handset, or press the Speaker button for hands-free operation.
To switch between two calls on line 1 and line 2: press either the L1 or L2 button to put one caller on hold and speak to the other. The active line is shown by a fast blinking light, the held one by a slow blink.
To make calls: enter the number using the keypad then pick up the handset to make a call; press the tick button to use the headset, or press the Speaker button to make a hands-free call.
- To dial an IP address, hold the hash key down to enter a dot
- To dial a SIP URL, press 1 then use the down-arrow on the menu navigation key to toggle between lower-case, capital letters and numbers, as indicated in the bottom right of the display. Use the left-arrow key to backspace and correct mistakes. Use the 1 key twice to get the @ character
To make attended transfers: put the caller on hold by pressing L1/L2 as appropriate. Dial the destination number as usual and speak to the recipient. Then press the Transfer and tick buttons to put the caller through and hang up your connection.
To make conference (three-way) calls: this requires changing the setup in the web configuration. If conference calls are important to you, it may be worth buying a higher-end Snom model which has dedicated conference buttons to join calls.
To pick up voicemails: dial *1 and enter the voicemail password when prompted (which you will find in the extension details in your VoIP control panel).
Setting up a headset: Navigate to the web interface of your Snom (as described in configuring the phone). Use the Setup > Preferences link at the left to choose your headset, and save the changes.
Adding extra accounts: You can add up to four accounts on your device. Simply follow the same procedure as outlined in configuring the phone to do this. For example, you might want to add the an extra account in identity two. You can use different ringtones for different identities if you wish, which will help you tell which account is being called.
To switch between accounts, simply use the left or right silver arrow keys on your device.

Advanced configuration and troubleshooting
(Only necessary if you do not use DHCP on your network.)
When the question "Do you use DHCP?" appears on the display, press the cancel button. (If this prompt doesn't appear, use the silver menu button to select Configuration > DHCP).
Follow the prompts to enter an IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS appropriate for your network. Use the numeric keypad, then the tick button to confirm the value.
TIP Once you've saved the IP address, you can use the web interface (Setup > Advanced link) to enter the other network settings. See configuring the phone for how to start this.
